How to Measure for Interior Cabinet Space

When measuring cabinets, remember that the face frame and panels reduce interior space compared to overall dimensions.

✨ Easy Rules of Thumb 

  • Interior Width: Subtract ~1.5" from the overall width 
    (accounts for side panels 0.5" and face frame overhang 0.25") 
  • Interior Depth: Subtract ~1.375" Premier or 1.25" Builder from the overall depth 
    (accounts for the face frame 0.75" and back panel .625" Premier or 0.5" Builder) 

📐 Example B21 – 21" W x 24" D Base Cabinet 

  • Overall width: 21" → Interior width: ~19.5" 
  • Overall depth: 24" → Interior depth: ~22.625" (Premier) or ~22.75" (Builder) 

📌 Key Takeaway 

The usable interior space of a cabinet is typically about 1-1.5" less than the overall exterior dimensions in both width and depth.
